Where to fish: ports, marinas and bays

From west to east, five stretches of coast account for most sportfishing departures. Each suits a different trip.

1. Los Cóbanos and Acajutla (Sonsonate)

Los Cóbanos is a rocky, volcanic stretch of coast just southeast of the port of Acajutla. It sits inside the Área Natural Protegida Complejo Los Cóbanos, declared in 2008 and listed as a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2019. The protected area covers about 21,312 hectares, roughly 97% of it marine, and protects the only reef formation on this part of the Pacific coast between Guatemala and Nicaragua[1][2].

For anglers: nearshore rock and reef hold snapper, grouper, jacks and roosterfish, and pelagics such as dorado, tuna and sailfish are within reach offshore[3]. Because this is a protected area with zoning, ask your captain which zones are open to fishing (see licences and rules).

Boats: on Oct 22, 2026, FishingBooker listed a single charter here, an offshore panga trip from US$600[4]. See Los Cóbanos listings

2. Puerto de La Libertad (La Libertad)

The closest working fishing port to San Salvador, at the center of the "Surf City" tourism strip. Artisanal boats are launched and recovered at the town's pier, which Salvadoran press reported was renovated and reopened to artisanal fishers[5]. The pier sits within the Puerto de La Libertad tourist complex run by the national tourism corporation[6].

For anglers: a practical base if you also want surf beaches (El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte). Local operators along this coast advertise close-to-shore trips[7], and third-party guides describe offshore runs from La Libertad for sailfish and dorado[8].

3. Costa del Sol and Bahía del Sol (La Paz)

A long beach peninsula about 25 km by road from the international airport (third-party route estimate; check a map app). Hotel Bahía del Sol hosts the El Salvador International Billfish Tournament, held since 1995[9]. Boats reach the ocean through a river mouth: Marlin magazine reported that the tournament is timed to the highest morning and evening tides because the crossing "can be a bit tricky otherwise"[10].

For anglers: the country's best-known offshore base for sailfish and marlin. Ask any captain here how tides affect departure and return times on your dates.

4. Bahía de Jiquilisco (Usulután)

El Salvador's largest estuary and mangrove system. The Jiquilisco Bay complex has been a Ramsar site since 2005 (63,500 ha)[11] and sits within the UNESCO Xiriualtique–Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2007[12]. The Ramsar listing records fishing and shellfish collection as main local livelihoods and beaches used by four sea-turtle species for nesting[11].

For anglers: calm-water estuary fishing (snook, snapper, jacks) rather than bluewater. The Río Lempa reaches the sea west of the bay; tarpon there are reported by some fishing guides[13], but documentation is thin, and a Sport Fishing magazine report treated a tarpon caught off El Salvador as a first[14]. Treat Lempa tarpon as exploratory and hire a guide who fishes it regularly.

5. Gulf of Fonseca (La Unión)

The gulf at the country's eastern end is shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua and is dotted with islands, including Meanguera and Conchagüita on the Salvadoran side[15]. Inshore targets include roosterfish and snapper[13]. On Oct 22, 2026, FishingBooker showed several listings based at El Tamarindo, on the Salvadoran side of the gulf[16].

Border note: the gulf's waters border two other countries. Your captain should know where the lines are; ask before the trip, especially on runs toward the outer islands.
