Where to stay

Pick the base by the fishing you want first, then the hotel. Morning departures make a long drive to the dock a bad idea.

We have not reviewed or stayed at any hotel for this guide, so we name areas, not properties. Hotel search links will appear here once our partnerships are set up.

La Libertad coast (El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte)

The busiest tourist strip, with the widest choice of rooms and restaurants, near the Puerto de La Libertad pier[1]. Good for groups that mix fishing with surfing. The State Department allows its own staff to travel at any hour between San Salvador and La Libertad department, an exception to its night-travel rule elsewhere[2].

Costa del Sol

Closest coast to the airport, and home of the billfish tournament base at Bahía del Sol[3]. The obvious choice for offshore billfish trips from the river-mouth marina.

Los Cóbanos and Acajutla

Quieter western coast, within the Los Cóbanos protected area[4]. Fewer services; suits anglers who want to be close to the boat.

Bahía de Jiquilisco

Mangrove islands and small communities inside a biosphere reserve[5]. Simple lodging; suits estuary fishing and nature trips.

Gulf of Fonseca (La Unión)

The far east of the country, with island boat trips from La Unión[6]. Plan for a longer transfer from SAL.
